Chemical Peels
At Harmony Health & Wellness, we provide VI Peel brand chemical peels for the face and body.
About Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is a cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance and texture of the skin. During a chemical peel, a chemical solution is applied to the skin, which causes the top layer of skin to peel off. This process removes dead skin cells and stimulates the production of new, healthier skin cells, resulting in a smoother, more even complexion. Chemical peels are commonly used to address a variety of skin concerns, including fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, sun damage, and uneven skin tone. They come in different strengths and types, ranging from superficial peels that target the outermost skin layer to deeper peels that penetrate more deeply into the skin. The choice of peel depends on the specific skin issues being addressed and the desired level of improvement. After a chemical peel, the skin may temporarily appear red and sensitive, but as it heals, it reveals a rejuvenated and more youthful appearance.
Types of chemical peels:
-VI Peel Original- for tone and texture concerns
-VI Peel Advanced- for collagen stimulation
-VI Peel Purify- for acne
-VI Peel Precision Plus- for skin discoloration hyperpigmentation such as sun spots or age spots
-VI Peel Purify with Precision Plus- for acne and acne scarring
-VI Peel body- for discoloration, scars, body acne, wrinkles, stretch marks, and KP
What to Expect
During a chemical peel appointment, you can anticipate a structured skincare procedure conducted by a licensed and board certified nurse practitioner. You will have a consultation with one of our nurse practitioners where you discuss your skincare concerns and goals. They will assess your skin type, sensitivity, and any contraindications to determine the most appropriate type of chemical peel for your needs. Once the treatment plan is established, the practitioner will cleanse your skin thoroughly and may apply a prep solution to enhance the peel's effectiveness. The chemical peel solution is then carefully applied to your skin and left on for a specific duration, which varies based on the peel's strength and your skin's response. You may experience a tingling or burning sensation during this time that should improve within a few minutes. Afterward, the healthcare practitioner will provide post-treatment instructions. With each chemical peel you will receive a take home kit that includes a series of skincare products to use for the next 7 days. We will review the take home kit with you at your appointment. We will also ask you to download the VI Peel phone application that will walk you through your skincare for the next few days and send you reminders about when you should complete the steps in the skincare routine post peel. Expect some redness, peeling, and sensitivity in the days following the appointment as your skin rejuvenates, but ultimately, you should notice improved skin texture and tone as a result of the chemical peel within one week.
Post Peel Tips
General
• The first two days your skin will look a little tan, bronzed, or pink. It may also feel a bit tight before the peeling begins.
• As a rule, treat it like a sunburn: avoid sun exposure, avoid sweating and avoid heat.
• During the peeling phase you must avoid sun exposure. Even after the peeling has subsided your new skin will be sensitive to UV light. Protect your investment and reapply your sunscreen when outdoors.
• If any products in the post peel kit sting or irritate beyond your tolerance reach out to your practitioner for options to use instead.
• The amount of visible peeling you will experience varies greatly. You will peel as much as your skin needs to peel.
• Each morning, apply the Post Treatment Repair Cream and SPF 50+ Sunscreen, and apply as needed throughout the day. Continue use for the 7-Day peeling process.
Peeling
• Safe products to use during peeling: VI Derm Gentle Purifying Cleanser, Post Treatment Repair Cream, SPF 50+. (From your home you can also use a gentle cleanser, Aquaphor, and sunscreen.)
• Days 3, 4 and 5 are the typical days of peeling. By day 6 most exfoliation has subsided.
• Typically, peeling begins on the third day, starting around the mouth then peeling outward. The forehead and neck will be the last areas to peel.
• We recommend cleansing your face prior to showering and keeping your face protected from hot water.
• When cleansing your face use your fingertips only. Avoid using washcloths or facial machine brushes during the first week.
• While the skin is exfoliating avoid pulling, picking, rubbing and any premature removal of skin. This could lead to significant irritation and possible hyperpigmentation. Never force or peel the skin off in sheets.
• When peeling make sure to keep your body hydrated and your skin moisturized.
• The Post Treatment Repair Cream may cause slight sensitivity when first applied but it quickly subsides.
• If you are excessively dry or irritated when peeling, add a light layer of Aquaphor to provide a protective barrier.
Post Peel
• Resuming Skin Care Products:
o Non-Actives: Can be resumed once peeling has subsided, usually day 6-7.
o Actives: Can be resumed once peeling has subsided and sensitivity has returned to normal, usually day 7-10.
• Physical Activity / Exercise:
o Refrain for 72-96 hours after peel application. Inducing excessive perspiration can lead to PIH or
blistering.
• Scheduling the Next VI Peel:
o VI Peels should be scheduled every 4-6 weeks (for best results)
• Additional Skincare Treatments:
o It is recommended to wait for a minimum of 2 weeks before any treatment that creates exfoliation of the skin. (Includes facials, extractions, waxing, and threading)
o Consult with your practitioner for other treatment options.
